Recipe for Shillelagh Law:

1) Start with a mix of rowdy Irish and Scottish pub songs, lightning-fingered jigs and reels, a cappella sea shanties in four-part harmony, and an occasional moving Celtic ballad.
2) Give it a unique flavor by stirring in some elements of bluegrass, contemporary songwriting, and jamband-style improvisation.
3) Add in the talented Celtic dancers that often show up and perform with the band.
4) Now imagine all that after the audience has consumed a lot of Guinness and Bushmill's.
5) And there you have it: Shillelagh Law, "the ale-swillingest, whiskey-drinkingest, floor-poundingest, love-makingest Irish Band in the world!"

Shillelagh Law has been an institution in the Birmingham Irish community for a number of years and through several personnel changes.  The band first came together in March of 1999 when Bailey’s Irish Pub opened up in Birmingham's Southside.  Energetic guitarist/vocalist Beau Goss, fiddler Leo McDermott, bassist Jeremy Burns, and bodhran player Beth Wetheral packed out the house every Sunday night.  The current lineup is:

  • Jason Bailey, mandolin & vocals
  • Jeremy Burns, bass, octave mandolin & vocals
  • Dain Forsythe, bodhran, whistle, bagpipes & vocals
  • Sam Pointer, guitar, bouzouki, fiddle & vocals

Some day we'll get it together and have a separate Shillelagh Law web site... for now www.slawmusic.com points to this page on Sam's site.  By the way, people often ask what the name means; here's one explanation.
